Three Cape Henlopen seniors signed letters of intent Nov. 18 in the rotunda at Cape Henlopen High School to play Division I lacrosse.
Luke Benson signed to play at the University of Jacksonville, while Kat Judge and Allie Yeager both signed to be teammates at Winthrop University in South Carolina.
Benson started as a freshman for Cape and has played most of the time at attack, but last season he was given some time at midfield as Cape worked to diversify its offensive posture.
"My major asset as a lacrosse player is my field sense and being able to make things happen," Benson said. "Just kind of creating goals. Jacksonville told me they see me as a quarterback played back at X [behind the goal].
"When I went down to Jacksonville, I just fell in love with the campus, the team and the coaches; it just seems like a right fit for me," he said.
The Dolphins have have a good number of players from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the country. They are a mid-level Division I program on the upswing and have Duke, Notre Dame, Penn State, UMass and Ohio State on their schedule. They play in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Kat Judge and Allie Yeager, two days after helping Cape win its third straight state championship in field hockey, have hung up their hockey sticks and signed letters of intent to play Division I lacrosse for the Winthrop Eagles of the Big South Conference.
"It's kind of sad knowing we'll never play hockey again," Judge said. Yeager added, "Most of the seniors on the team, we've played together since second grade; just hard to believe that is all over."
There was no decision for Kat and Allie to choose the same school, then sign together. "I committed first, and later they talked to Allie and she committed as well," said Judge.
"We are so lucky to have had such great coaches and support here at Cape," Yeager said. "Playing for Coach P.J. is just the best; we have learned so much and gotten so much better."
