Business students excel at state BPA competition

Fifteen students in the Business, Finance and Marketing career-technical area at Sussex Technical High School earned spots on the Business Professionals of America National Team by taking home 22 awards at the Delaware state level contest held Feb. 27 at Dover Downs. The national competition will take place in Indianapolis, Ind., from April 29 to May 5.
BFM sophomore winners by rank and team affiliation include second place, Economic Research Team - Madison Bendistis, Heather Windels and Laurie Wroten and fourth place, Banking and Finance - Laurie Wroten.
BFM junior winners include the following first-place awards: Presentation Management Team - Chelsi Williams, Hannah Mayhorn, and Emily Nichols; Administrative Support Concepts - Chelsi Williams; Administrative Support Team - Olivia Outten, Ty Showell, and Jess Singer; Fundamental Accounting -Garrett LaCurts; Presentation Management, Individual - Garrett LaCurts; and Digital Medial Production - Emily Nichols. Second-place awards include Payroll Accounting - John Barrett, and Database Applications - Olivia Outten. The fifth-place award in Insurance Concepts went to Garrett LaCurts.
BFM senior awards include second place in Medical Procedures - Danny Halloran. The third-place award, also in Medical Procedures, went to Nhu Do. The third-place award in Banking and Finance went to Trey White, and third place Entrepreneurship to Laura Zwiebel. Danny Halloran won a fifth place in Prepared Speech.
Students who had outstanding performances but did not qualify for nationals were BFM10: third, Global Marketing Team - Lela Bones and Ashlan Venables; and sixth, Prepared Speech - J.D. Moore; BFM 12: third, Small Business Management Team - Tyler Butler, Sammie Campos and Bri Wentworth.
Teachers and advisors of the BFM program and BPA at Sussex Tech are Frank Makray, Dr. Sabrina Neal, and Andy Feightner.
