Bangkok Thai: Fresh ingredients, traditional recipes
Bangkok Thai Cuisine owner Jang Finger says she planned a quiet opening for her new restaurant near Lewes, but it didn't take long for word to get out to legions of excited local foodies.
The new restaurant in Mariner's Square shopping center on Route 1 has already struck a chord, featuring fresh ingredients, spicy Asian dishes, and specials, Finger said. The response has been almost overwhelming.
"I thought it would be slow...," she said, "but the first weekend we got slammed."
The pace has been consistent, she said, and residents of the Cape Region are more familiar with Thai specialties than many of her customers were when she opened her first location in Dover in 2008.
The cold weather may have actually played a role in the early success of her restaurant, even as she waits for a liquor license, the Thai native said.
"Especially in the cold weather right now, Thai food is hot food to make people warm," Finger said. "We use a lot of ingredients so there is a lot of flavor and our menu has so much variety – it's not general."
Counting more than a dozen appetizers, five soups, salads and entrees, the menu features more than 50 family recipes ranging from curries to pad Thai noodles and fried rice. Many of the dishes are available with a choice of tofu, chicken and beef or even duck, catfish and soft shell crabs.
Even as the weather begins to warm up and the Cape Region starts to fill with the return of seasonal residents and tourists, Finger said she plans to continue offering value at her new location on Route 1.
"Many selections are affordably priced with fresh seafood," the owner said. "We have so many selections, and it's not small portions. My food will fill people up."
Relying on Thai spices and fresh ingredients means even the sauces at Bangkok Thai are homemade, Finger said.
"These are our family recipes, and we get most of the ingredients from Thailand," Finger said. "I eat what we sell to customers. It's real Thai food."
