Richard S. Baker, charter boat captain
Richard S. Baker, 72, of Middletown, and Palm City, Fla., formerly of Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, after battling ALS. He was born in Wilmington, April 11, 1942, son of the late Francis J. Sr. and Lora Lee (Eaton) Baker.
Earning the rank of corporal, Richard proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961-66. Richard loved boating, and obtained his captain's license where he chartered fishing trips out of Delaware and Florida waters. He also enjoyed traveling around the world to participate in deep sea fishing tournaments. Richard was a member of VFW Post 10132, Hope Sound, Fla., where he served as a senior vice commander, member of the honor guard, and the VFW Riders. Riding his Harley with friends was one of his favorite pastimes. Richard owned and operated his own general contracting business, DBHI, until his retirement.
Mr. Baker is survived by his loving daughter, Kristine Baker of Middletown, who cared for him in his final year; three brothers, Mickey Baker and his wife Fran of Harbeson, Bill Baker and his wife Pat of Millsboro, and Tom Baker of New Castle; and seven nieces and nephews, Keith, Karla, Kimberly, Karen, Bill, Christopher and Nicholas.
A memorial service with military honors will be held Friday, March 20, at 2 p.m., at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes.
