Southern Delaware Rollergirls prep for season's first home bout
By day, they're business owners, mothers, meteorologists and professional working women. By night, they gear up, flex their muscles and adopt new identities, as “Glitz N SLAMher” or “Sgt. Slamwich” with the Southern Delaware Rollergirls.
The all-female flat track roller derby league isn't new to the scene - they were founded in April 2011 - but they're always looking for more fans and more support. They love their sport, but they love the community even more, which is why they use their rough-and-tumble game as a way to raise money for local charities, including the Delaware Food Bank, People's Place and the SPCA.
“It's a real sport, and we're not a bunch of hooligans on roller skates,” said President Kasey Bennett, aka Racey Anthony. “We have jobs and families.”
Glitz N SLAMher, or Melissa Clampitt as she's known to her Lewes family, says it's amazing to be part of a team with such awesome and fierce women. The roller girls dedicate about six hours a week to the sport, and also have adopted a portion of Route 16 near Selbyville as a charity project, and are always looking for new ways to help their local communities.
“We're your everyday girls,” Clampitt said.
The team's first home bout, which will be held Saturday, May 16, at the Milford Skating Center at 1 Park Ave. in Milford, will have the SoDel girls going head-to-head against Philadelphia team Philly Block Party for their second bout of the season. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the whistle blows at 6:30 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are available for $8, or can be purchased for $10 at the door.
