I teach Svaroopa® yoga because of my own healing experience with this practice. My journey into yoga started over 30 years ago. Simply put, pain from a serious car accident finally led me to try yoga. It worked. Of course this took years, first surgery, then physical therapy.

Almost 10 years later a chiropractor who was finally able to help me with numbness in both arms, pain in my neck and sciatica, said to me, “I’ve been decompressing your spine to relieve your pain. If you do yoga, you will keep this decompression and manage your pain.”

Since I was keen to avoid surgery, I tried yoga. It did help and I enjoyed it. At this time I was living on the Outer Banks with my husband Doug, a North Carolinian. Eventually we moved back to my hometown, Rehoboth Beach. I started classes sporadically at first with local teachers. The second teacher, Andrea Kennedy, still teaches here. Andrea was teaching another style when she took a course at “Phoenix Rising” in Massachusetts with Rama Berch, now our teacher Swami Nirmalananda, creator of Svaroopa® yoga. She returned from the course to teach a class I was in. Immediately I felt the difference, I just knew it was the one.

I followed Andrea from a gym, to the Y and finally to the famous Napa Auto Parts Yoga Studio on Rt 1. If you are local, you knew it well. We jokingly called it “Napa Yoga.” A great time was had by all and many Svaroopa® yoga teachers began here.

It was the mid-nineties and yoga was growing in popularity. There were several teachers at the studio, including Kim Abplanalp, Maria Abbruzzi and Sally Broadhurst, all still teaching. It was Kim, however, who planted the seed that I could teach yoga.

The first teacher training was that February 2001 at the Kripalu Center. I was completely hooked. I continued every teacher training, flying to LaJola California three times to complete what I considered basic training, which I now know is beyond. I was determined to be fully certified and then some, with as much advanced training as I could afford. This September I will take yet another teacher training with my amazing teacher.

Throughout my 14 years with Svaroopa® yoga, Rama Berch (Swami Nirmalananda) continued to dedicate her entire life to teaching and sharing her passion for yoga, creating a top notch school and guiding students through meditation training, becoming a Swami (yoga nun or monk), and so much more, which is a whole other story!

Do more yoga!

Namaste,
Terry
