Joey Andrisani of Wilmington wins 13th Race into the New Year

January 4, 2016

The 13th annual Race into the New Year Dec. 31 was won by 33-year-old Joey Andrisani of Wilmington in a time of 17:42. There were 229 runners chasing him, including the under-20-minute crowd of Perry Rapp in 18:35, Lynn Danner in 18:52, Patrick Beebe in 18:58, Nyandusi Omurwa in 19:03, Joshua Houtkin in 19:11, Todd Pettyjohn in 19:19, Paul Montini in 19:29, Susan Dunn in 19:32 and Chris Stanley in 19:36.

Andrisani did not run in high school or college; he played lacrosse at A.I. duPont High School. He is low mileage for his age and competitive in a friendly, well-balanced sort of way.

"I have no idea what my best distance is; I’m going to run a marathon and hope someday to break three hours, but I don’t know if that’s realistic," Andrisani said.

A sub-3 marathon is slightly under a 7-minute per mile pace and Joey’s 5K was 5:42, so the mission is to slow down and last longer.

Susan Dunn was the first woman in 19:29. She was followed by Lisa Jalot in 20:17, Paula Pels in 20:33, Charity Farrell in 20:56, Erin Johnson in 21:33, Tricia Gibson in 22:36, Olivia Montini in 23:00, Karen Kolobielski in 23:11, LuAnn Goldfarb in 23:48 and Lauren Johnson in 24:17.

The last-day-of-the-year race was a milestone for many dedicated runners who go over 50 for the calendar year with a few who approach 100.
