Sussex Academy breaks ground on new wing

Sussex Academy hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on January 21 to celebrate the construction on a new middle school wing. The $6.4 million project is underway and completion is scheduled for August.
The 30,000 square foot wing will have 12 classrooms, 3 science labs, offices and a multipurpose room. The multipurpose room will be used for the middle school physical education classes, team expedition showcases and middle school team wide meetings and activities. It will be middle school basketball regulation size and will be suitable for high school volleyball games and practices as needed.
“This is an exciting time for Sussex Academy,” said Sussex Academy Executive Board president, Jennifer Scott. “Sussex Academy has excellent students, committed parents and an outstanding faculty. To welcome our first graduating class and provide our middle school students with a separate learning area makes our school complete.”
Funding for the new wing is being made possible from $4.9 million dollar loan from NCALL. When construction is complete in late August, the loan will be repaid by a permanent 40-year mortgage from the USDA of $4.9 million. The Sussex Academy Foundation, through a capital campaign, has raised $1.5 million for the project and will be responsible for raising any additional funds needed to complete the construction.
Richard Y Johnson & Sons, Milford, DE will oversee the project.
Sussex Academy is centrally located in Georgetown, Delaware.
The school teaches an Expeditionary Learning curriculum and all 11th and 12thgrade students will be enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program.
