Third Street water back on in Rehoboth

Emergency issue caused several hour disruption
November 19, 2018

According to an 11:40 a.m. message from the Rehoboth Beach Twitter account, an emergency water main break has forced the city to turn off the water on Third Street, between Lake and Park avenues. The water is anticipated to be off for several hours.

In an 11:47 email, Rehoboth Beach Public Works Director Kevin Williams said the break occurred when a city crew was making the final tie-in for the new water main on Park Avenue. Williams said the valve blew causing uncontrolled flow. The on-site crew responded by moving upstream, to the next valve, to shut the water off, he said.

“They will now proceed to dewater the excavation and make any required repairs and replace the valve,” Williams said. “The flow has been stopped until the repairs can be made.”

UPDATE: In a 5:23 p.m. email, Krys Johnson, city spokeswoman, said water service has been restored. Water department staff have completed repairs, she said, advising to run the cold water tap for a few minutes to clear the pipes.
