Athletes of the Week Aug. 1

August 1, 2025
Franc Cook

Franc is a former standout goalie who attended Cape and Lynchburg College. He recently showcased his elite skills with a standout 20-save performance for Shorebreak Lacrosse, helping lead the team to a 10-5 victory over Rip Tide Restoration in the DE Turf Summer League Championship. His leadership on the back line was crucial, anchoring a second-half shutout against a strong Rip Tide offense. Throughout his coaching career, Franc has made an impact at every level of lacrosse. He has served as an assistant coach at Cape (high school), Delaware Tech (JUCO), Arcadia University (Division III), Colorado Mesa University (Division II) and Jacksonville University (Division I). His résumé includes two state titles with Cape, a Region 19 championship with Del Tech, and four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles with Colorado Mesa. He’s currently the program manager for campus athletics at Delaware Tech in Dover.

Thomas Cunningham

Thomas has been a key member of the state champion Milton 9-11 all-star team representing Delaware at East Region Invitational in Beverly, Mass. In the state tournament series July 18-20, the rising sixth-grader started on the mound in the first game, striking out five batters over four innings without conceding an earned run. He was in the lead-off spot and scored a run in the 4-3 win. Thomas got his hitting streak going in a 3-2 loss July 19 before going 2-for-3 at the plate and scoring twice in the 6-1 series clincher. In Beverly, Cunningham has been holding down the keystone. The homeschooler began playing baseball when he was 6 years old and started pitching four years ago. He is enjoying this run with his teammates, and when the season is over, the 11-year-old will kill time fishing and camping.

CJ Fritchman

A midfielder and face-off specialist at Salisbury University via Cape, CJ helped lead Shorebreak Lacrosse to the DE Turf Summer League Championship July 28 in Frederica. He pulled 70% of the possessions at the midfield X and scored a goal in the 10-5 victory over Rip Tide. CJ was a four-year varsity athlete at Cape. He was an all-state honorable mention outside linebacker in football; All-American selection and state champion in wrestling; and an all-state, All-American and 2023 Delaware Player of the Year selection in lacrosse. As a Dewey Beach Patrol member, he was a USLA National sprint team champion in 2021 and 2022; and the national beach flags champion in 2023 and 2024. He will represent Sussex County next week at the USLA National Lifeguard Championship. "CJ is going on his fifth summer at the patrol, and this year has stepped into a lieutenant role," said Sr. Lt. Hank Coveleski. "He’s been a solid guard, and we’re excited to see what he can achieve now in a leadership role. His athletic ability is also a great bonus that we welcome, and we most definitely enjoy to watch him in lifeguard competitions."

Jase Mitchell

After helping to lead Cape Henlopen High School to a state championship, the Delaware Baseball Gatorade Player of the Year was selected in the seventh round by the Houston Astros in the MLB Draft July 13. Ten days later, Jase became a professional baseball player when he signed his first contract July 23. Scouts were impressed with Jase’s raw power and big arm after the Cape grad displayed good potential at showcases in the spring. The next step for Jase is playing for the Florida Complex League Astros in West Palm Beach, Fla. Jase is settling in down there and said he is living his dream life. The humble teenager is excited to soak up years of knowledge from his coaches. Prior to being drafted by the Astros, Jase had committed to playing baseball at the University of Kentucky in the very competitive SEC conference.
