Lauren Pollock
Running the Cape Henlopen State Park trails on a brisk Saturday morning, 22-year-old Sea Witch half-marathoner Lauren Pollock is a frightful sight. She is a smiling spirit. Lauren won the 2024 half marathon in 1:32:07 and repeated her feat in 2025 winning in 1:27.14. “I ran my best time by three minutes,” she said. Lauren ran for Middletown in high school and described her high school running self as “not very good.” “I ran on cross country and club teams at Delaware,” she said. “My times are now getting better, and I love the training. I’m thinking my best racing times are still ahead of me. It’s pretty exciting.” Lauren ran a personal-best 5K time of 18:50 last spring, and logged a 24:02 6K for the third fastest in UD club history.
Anton Schierenberg
This junior German exchange student has added a defensive force for the Cape soccer team this season. He recently made 12 saves, including two stops on penalty kicks, in the 4-3 victory over Sussex Central. He has 82 saves on the season. He also scored on a 50-yard direct kick in the game, giving him two scores on the season. "Anton is a phenomenal asset and player that makes us better," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "He is one of the best goalkeepers to ever put on gloves for the Cape Henlopen soccer program. He has been an absolute pleasure to coach, and I know the boys love him as a teammate." He was recently voted first-team All-Henlopen Conference.
Brenner Short
A senior for the Cape soccer squad, this center back scored the tying goal in the 54th minute against Sussex Central off a pass from Carter Matarazzi. He also picked up the winning assist on a throw-in to Lawson Whaley with three minutes to go in the match. "Brenner is a leader of men," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "He holds himself accountable when he makes mistakes, and holds his teammates accountable too. He plays with passion, heart and determination." Brenner has seven goals and two assists this season. He also plays for the Vikings’ lacrosse team in the spring and has committed to play at Yale after graduation.
Lawson Whaley
A senior on the Cape soccer squad, this 6-foot-5 center defensive midfielder can get major air on jumps, and he used that ability to pound a header over the Sussex Central goalie to give the Vikings the 4-3 victory over the Knights in a pivotal Henlopen North match. The win moves the Vikings into the Henlopen Conference Championship game. He has scored six goals this season and helped on five other scores. "Lawson is a technically sound, large body, physical player that makes things happen," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "He’s a catalyst in the central midfield, a force that spurs us toward success." Lawson was recently voted first-team All-Henlopen Conference.
