The front-to-back renovation of the former Carlton’s building on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach took another step toward completion with approval of an awning by city commissioners during a meeting July 19.

Commissioners needed to vote on the matter because the awning is encroaching over public space – in this case, the sidewalk. The unanimous vote allows Mayor Stan Mills to enter into a license agreement with the owner.

Located at 31 Rehoboth Ave., the ocean block building was home to clothing store Carlton’s for more than six decades. It was founded in 1960 by Harry Derrickson. Trey and Marcia Kraus took over the business in 2005 and ran it until it closed in December. Prior to being a clothing store, the building was home to a movie theater.

Renovation of the building began in February, with the demolition of the rear portion of the building. The building was T-shaped, with the top of the T actually sitting on a Baltimore Avenue lot immediately to the north. The building is no longer T-shaped.

In addition to removing that portion of the building, the front facade and interior were both redone.

Prior to the favorable vote, City Building and Licensing Director Mary Ellen Gray also recommended approval.

After approval, Katie Sarver, building owner and granddaughter of Derrickson, said the new tenant is expected to open this fall.
