The Cape Middle School Classic Track & Field Championships will be this Saturday, May 5, at Legends Stadium at Cape Henlopen High School featuring 6-8 middle school teams from across the State of Delaware. The undefeated Beacon Middle girls’ team will compete along with the Beacon boys who will join Mariner, Dover, Selbyville, Chipman and likely a few more teams. The regular order of events will be contested beginning with the 55-meter hurdles and finishing with the 4-by-200m. Awards will be presented to the top six finishers in each event as well as the overall trophy presented to the top-scoring team. Come out and support the local Beacon and Mariner teams this Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

St. Anthony's Triathlon
Jake Bamforth, living and going to school in Tampa, has fallen to the triathlon bug as he just completed his second triathlon race this spring, this time the popular St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Fla. Jake won his 20-24 age group, finishing 19th overall in a time of 1:06:40 – 11:27 for the 750-meter swim, 30:26 for the 20K bike averaging 24.4 mph, and finishing with a 19:05 5K, which was the fourth fastest in the sprint. A total of 621 athletes competed in his division. The event brought more than 3,000 competitors from 41 different states and eight countries; it is one of the largest in Florida. Another local in the race was Rehoboth athlete Betsy Tootell, who finished fourth in her age group in the Olympic Division, swimming 1,500 meters in 37:05, biking 40K in 1:30:30, and running a 10K in 1:09:19. Betsy finished with a total time of 3:23:01.

The Cape Relays
The Cape Relays were created four years ago to honor the Penn Relays of Philadelphia, and this year’s event was one of the most exciting meets of the year. The top three teams on the boys’ side were separated by only three points, as Gauger-Cobbs Middle School from Wilmington won the title with 73 points, while second place went to Dover Central with 72 points. Mariner finished third with 71 points. Mariner showed their strength by grabbing many seconds and thirds in the meet and winning one event, the triple jump, with the duo of John Small (35-1) and Christian Fuscellaro (26-9) and a combined distance of 61-10½.

The Beacon boys finished in a tie for fourth with 59 points and won two events in the meet. The foursome of Julian Callaway, Ethan Edery, Daeshaun Lewis, and Jeremiah Jackson won the mile relay in 4:09.6 with Jackson bringing the crowd to its feet with a 55.1 anchor for the sixth-grader. Beacon also won the long jump with Jackson (17-5) and Jordan Baines (16-5) combining for a distance of 33-10½.

On the girls’ side, Beacon won their fourth title in a row scoring 100 points, while Mariner was second with 70 points. Beacon won six events in the meet, led by two new meet records turned in by the triple jump duo of Noelle Sabbagh (31-7) and Tia Jarvis (30-3) for a combined distance of 61-10. The discus duo of Haley Archambault (73-2) and Kristina Allen (58-0) also set a meet record with a combined distance of 131-2. Beacon also won the shot put relay with Archambault (27-1) and Mehkia Applewhite (32-10½) winning in 59-11½, while also winning the sprint medley with the team of Morgan Mahoney, Ariyanna Dabney, Jayden Hayden, and Lainey Shockro with a time of 4:51.6. Beacon also captured the 4-by-800m relay with the team of Elizabeth Melson, Alyssa Swann, Grace Hudson, and Shockro in a time of 11:32.0, while also winning the rarely run shuttle hurdle relay with the team of Maren Buckaloo, Kacie Gibbons, Chase Norton, and Noelle Sabbagh in a time of 39.8 seconds.

Cape Elementary Championship
One of the most exciting events of the night at the Cape Relays was the Cape Relay Elementary 4-by-100m Championship of America, where we filled the lanes with representative teams from H.O. Brittingham, Love Creek, Milton, Rehoboth, and Shields representing the future of Cape track & field. When the dust had settled, it was Shields Elementary School and the hot anchor of Piper Price who teamed with Ja'tara Morris, Quinn Nutter, and Shelby Manlove to circle the oval in 1:03.0. On the boys’ side it was the team from Rehoboth that took the title with the foursome winning in a time of 1:03.8.

Beacon splits with Chipman
The Beacon girls finished their dual-meet season at 9-0 with a 96-13 win over Chipman, while the Chipman boys swept the triple jump to squeak out a close 58-51 win over Beacon. Jeremiah Jackson scored 13 points to lead Beacon by winning the long jump and 400 meters, and placing second in the 200 meters. Tia Jarvis was a three-event winner capturing the long jump, the triple jump, and the 400 meters.

Mariner vs. Dover Central
The Mariner boys' and girls' track and field teams visited Dover Central May 2. Final team scores had not been tabulated as of press time, but several Mariner athletes delivered standout performances. On the boys' side, eighth-grader Elliott Bastian clocked 5:20.8 over 1,600 meters to get the win and set a new school record, while fellow eighth-grader C.J. Connors threw 37-feet in the shot put to establish a school record of his own. Eighth-grader John Small was a double winner in the long jump and triple jump, while Mariner also got victories from eighth-grader Dawson Clifton in the 200 meters (24.4, personal best), Trey Leggins in the 400 meters (1:02.0), and Mekhi Smith in the high jump (4-feet-6-inches).

The girls were paced by eighth-grader Reagan Ciabattoni, who set a school record of 1:03.7 in winning the 400 meters, eclipsed 33 feet to take home the triple jump, and easily outclassed the field in the long jump. Eighth-grader Mia Nuebling comfortably swept the 1,600 meters (6:15.9) and 800 meters (2:50.2), while seventh-grader Mackinzie Brown threw over 29 feet to win the shot put.
