Breakaway Bikes, off Route 1 in Dewey Beach, has opened for business.

The bicycle shop sells and rents bikes, as well as offering service and repairs. Owner Dan Malley opened the store because it allowed him to bring together his passion for the beach and for cycling in a community he feels great about.

“We’re really excited not just to be starting a new business, but to be starting a new business here, in this community,” Malley said.

Malley says he’s received a warm welcome from residents in the area who have come in to say hello and check out the shop. He’s found one result of the pandemic is people have become more interested in cycling, since it’s a healthy way to be distanced.

“That’s been nice for us to be able to help this community take advantage of this renewed interest in cycling,” Malley said.

He’s also been taking safety precautions due to the pandemic. As of now, customers are not allowed to try on clothes or gloves in the store. Rental equipment is diligently cleaned with bleach and alcohol once it’s returned, and gloves and masks are worn by Malley inside the store.

Malley is collaborating with a local artist in Lewes on a bike design that will benefit a local charity. He’s also looking for opportunities to partner with other businesses in the area.

Breakaway Bikes is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call 302-567-5139 or go to Breakawaybikesdewey.com.
