Cameron Wick receives $1,000 scholarship through SoDel Teachers Fund
Cameron Wick, a recent Cape Henlopen High School graduate, is the recipient of the first SoDel Teacher's Fund scholarship, which was made possible when teachers Bridget Marshall and Emily Walls pooled their $500 grants. "We started the SoDel Teachers Fund to give educators who work in SoDel restaurants in the summertime money to help with classroom expenses,” said Scott Kammerer, president of SoDel Concepts.
“They’ve published students’ work, supported after-school programs and purchased essentials such as backpacks, school supplies and even food for students in need.”
Marshall, who teaches 12th-grade world history, and Walls, who teaches ninth-grade Spanish, asked students to write an essay based on Mahatma Gandhi’s quote: “My life is my message.” The students had to write about the message they’d like their lives to convey.
The judges who read the essays were unanimous in their decision to award the $1,000 scholarship to Wick. In her essay, the Dewey Beach resident wrote: “By learning and being able to identify and manage my weaknesses and strengths, it has allowed me to turn any obstacle into an opportunity. My life message overall is to make the best out of any situation, even if it seems impossible.” Wick plans to enter Coastal Carolina University in fall. The grants are an initiative by SoDel Cares, the philanthropic arm of SoDel Concepts.
“That two of our teachers would honor SoDel Cares by creating this scholarship for a deserving student is just amazing,” Kammerer said. “We are all about supporting our local public schools, our teachers and our students. This scholarship is the perfect example of that mission.” For more information, go to www.sodelconcepts.com.
