Cape boys’ lax falls to Sallies in DIAA championship

Vikings put a scare in No. 1 seed with strong first half
June 1, 2025

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team’s 2025 campaign came to an end with a 12-9 loss to Salesianum May 31, at Riders Stadium in Camden. The Vikings finish with a 17-3 record.

The Vikings started off hot and kept up the pressure, outscoring the Sallies high-powered offense 3-1 in the first quarter and continuing to goad the No. 1 seed by taking an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.

But Sallies scored the first five goals of the second half, and closed the game with the final three tallies, two with an open net.

Cape’s Grant Conway and Brenner Short each scored a hat trick in the game. Burke Healy cranked two goals, and AJ Grapski added a score.

“This group of guys, from beginning to end, worked very hard,” said Healy. “There’s not one practice or game where we didn’t give everything we have. We fought through so many injuries. These guys were great to play with, and I wouldn’t ask for a better team.”

Evan Burris, Tanner Wyshock, Grapski and Short were credited with an assist.

“It was a great season,” said Burris. “We battled through a lot of adversity. We had a lot of young guys, and they stepped up and played great.”

Jake Hutchison scooped eight ground balls.

“I’m really proud of these guys,” said Hutchison. “We had an awesome, very successful season.”

Junior Mason Trench made nine saves in the game.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. “They fought hard every day this season, and to see their growth was amazing. The game didn’t go the way we wanted, but they left everything out on that field.”

Senior Luca Pompeii had six goals and an assist to lead Salesianum.
