The Cape boys’ lacrosse team finished off its regular-season schedule with a 21-1 running-clock victory over Sussex Tech May 9 at the DE Turf Complex in Frederica.
The Cape squad started off hot, scoring in the first 10 seconds of the game, and never looked back. The Vikings tallied 10 goals in the first quarter and five in the second to take a commanding 15-0 lead into the halftime break. Racing the running clock in the second half, the Vikings put four more goals up in the third stanza. The Ravens finally got in the book, scoring one in the third period for their only score of the day. Cape continued playing tough defense, shutting out the Ravens in the fourth period while adding two more goals on offense.
Burke Healy led the Vikings with four goals and five assists. Grant Conway and Matt Popovich each scored a hat trick. Braddock Smith, Tanner Wyshock, Ronan Presler and Patrick Healy hit the back of the twine twice. Evan Burris, Brenner Short and Carter Nemcic each scored once.
Hank Anderson tallied three helpers, Patrick Healy had two, and Jake Hutchison, Presler, Brooks Leonhartt and Channing Smith each had one assist.
Cape keepers Mason Trench and Patrick Little each made three saves.
“We came into the game and played as hard as we could,” said Wyshock.
“I think we get a lot of questions about our depth,” said Popovich. “I think today showed that as deep as we need to go, we can hang with anybody. When we go in for the starters, we just have to play our hardest.”
“Tech is very physical and they play hard,” said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. “Our guys played a good game and handled themselves well. We are looking forward to getting back to work this week and preparing for what is ahead.”
The win moves the Vikings to 13-2. They won the Northern Division and will play for the Henlopen Conference crown. The Vikings will host Sussex Academy at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17.
