Cape boys top Tech 73-43

Vikings shoot season-best 54%
January 12, 2023

Senior forward Dylan Fannin came off the bench to tally 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds as the Cape Henlopen boys’ basketball team downed host Sussex Tech 73-43 Jan. 10 in Georgetown.

Junior guard Tyrone Tolson added 15 points, six assists and four steals for Cape (7-2, 5-1 Henlopen North), which shot a season-best 54% from the floor and won for the sixth time in its last seven games.

Head coach Steve Re saw significant growth from his charges in the victory.

“Focus is what we talk about all the time, and just being consistent with our effort with things like rebounding,” Re said. “Defensively, we locked [Tech] up pretty good. We out-rebounded them by a lot and shot a super-high percentage, so the numbers looked great. We did a good job not settling, attacking the basket, and having three-pointers come in-to-out versus side-to-side. The stats that always matter the most are turnovers to assists, and that had to be a season low in turnovers for us. There’s a lot of maturing going on with us right now, and hopefully that continues.”

The Ravens (2-7, 0-6 Henlopen North) hung around early thanks to some timely long-range shooting, but Fannin poured in 11 first-half points to help the Vikings take a nine-point lead at the break. Cape turned on the afterburners from that point on, outscoring Tech 43-22 in the second half.

Senior wing Trey Leggins contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three three-pointers for the Vikings, who also got a career-high eight points from senior guard Timmy Hitchcock and a six-point, seven-board outing from senior big man Odin Potemski.

With leading scorer Drew Zimmerman sidelined by a knee injury, Cape used its depth to dismantle the Ravens. Ten Vikings scored on the night, and Cape’s bench players racked up 41 points on remarkable 20-for-29 shooting.

The Vikings valued their possessions, committing a season-low 11 turnovers. They also cleaned up on the glass, doubling up Tech with 38 rebounds.
