Cape football got housed on Homecoming Oct. 19 at Legends Stadium, losing to visiting Milford 38-0 to drop to 1-6 on the season.

Cape’s final three games are versus Sussex Central at home followed by Dover and Sussex Tech on the road. The formula to get well is stashed somewhere in the future.

“We are running out of bodies,” said coach J.D. Maull. “We’ve had players missing games to concussion protocols, and a few are gone because of behaviors and the usual number of orthopaedic injuries. And we only have six total players in the junior class. We are playing young guys in key positions, and they are learning about mental toughness because it has been tough.”

Milford had five different players score touchdowns along with quarterback Shawn Saxon throwing a touchdown pass and kicker Jonathan Gaglione kicking a 22-yard field goal and five extra points.

The score was 14-0 after one quarter. Tyron Mifflin hauled in a 20-yard pass from Saxon, while Kadin Bates scored on a 25-yard run.

The second stanza is where the game went south for the winter. Cape faced a fourth and goal from the one and got stoned. Two plays later, Rahshawn Price raced 95 yards for a touchdown. Cape drove the ball on the ensuing drive only to fumble it away in the end zone. Milford then marched to the 5-yard line of Cape and kicked a 22-yard field goal to close out the half with a 24-0 lead.

The extended halftime Homecoming festivities included three Cape players in the homecoming court, just an image to be debated by the alumni along the fence.

Milford scored twice more in the second half on a 2-yard run by Rodney Robinson in the third period and a 48-yard run by Jabraih Luke to close out the game.

MASH Unit - Starting running backs Joe Kirby and Curtis Purnell were out with injuries. Jack Dennis will not play versus Central due to concussion protocol. Various linemen have totaled eight games lost due to concussion protocol. Cape’s JV is 4-1 with a Monday, Oct. 22 game at scheduled at Milford. The freshman team is 1-3, but many freshman use up their quarters in JV and varsity games.
