Lady Vikings move to final against Tatnall
May 26, 2021

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team is peaking and preparing for their state championship appearance after a 15-5 demolishing of Ursuline May 25 at home. They will face Tatnall at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 27, at Dover High School.

The Lady Vikings started off quickly, scoring 10 goals before the Raiders could get near the Cape cage. Senior goalie Destiny Kusen was a brick wall and made seven big-time saves to cease any threat.

“We have some tough competition in the playoffs,” said Kusen. “It’s pumping everyone up to be here one more day. We’re pumped and we’re ready.”

“I’m looking forward to playing in my first state championship game with my teammates,” said freshman defender Montana Jones, who made some over-the-top defensive plays.

The Vikings outshot the Raiders 20-12.

Emily Monigle led the offense with four goals. Haley Craig, Ella Rishko, Lulu Rishko and Kelly Bragg each pounded two into the Raiders’ twine. Carrie Clausius, Riley Keen and Molly Mendes each scored a goal.

“I think our team has improved a lot throughout these tournament games,” Monigle said. “I’m really excited to show everybody what we can do in the championship game.”

Craig, Bragg, Keen and Mendes garnered assists in the game.

Lexi Goff led the Raiders with two goals. Lilly Rice, Chloe Bethea-Jones and Isabella Koechert each tallied a single score. Raiders keeper Amelia Cradler stopped five shots.

“We’ve come a long way since we played Ursuline the first time,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood. “We played better tonight. We’ve worked hard for it. We are young and we had an adrenaline rush, and when we settled down we played well. Tatnall’s a full team. We’ll have to play hard for a full game.”
