The Cape girls’ basketball team moved to 12-2 with a 60-30 victory over Sussex Tech Feb. 3 at Cape.
The Vikings started off with a dominating 21-4 first quarter, then cruised to a 37-14 halftime lead. The second half featured two periods of mass substitutions, as the Vikings outscored the Ravens 23-16 to garner the 30-point win.
“This game was our ninth win in the North,” said Cape coach Ron Dukes. “Our focus is to finish undefeated. The girls want to achieve that accomplishment. We started the game zoned in on both ends of the floor. We wanted to make sure everyone played in that game, and we saw some nice effort. Harper [Mamele] is continuing to improve, and it was nice to see five threes go in.”
“I think everyone who got in understood their assignment and kept defensive pressure on them the whole time,” said Mamele. “On offense, we filled the lanes well and made nice cuts to get us easy shots in order to go up early. Our coaches stressed how we need to continue to box out, but otherwise were satisfied with our effort and execution.”
Amalia Fruchtman scored 18 for the home team, while teammate Ally Diehl dropped 12. Maya Yngve hit a pair of three-pointers, and Mairead Rishko and Jordynn Bowe each tallied five points.
“It was a good game to get everyone quality minutes and to see us play unselfish basketball,” said assistant coach Sam Purple. “We shared the ball well and did a better job creating good looks. We’ve been stressing taking more shots and attacking the basket in practice, and tonight they started looking more comfortable and confident.”
