Cape girls’ lax runs past Polytech 15-3

Vikings are 12-0 with 131 straight wins in Delaware
May 6, 2019

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team ran away from visiting Polytech May 3, winning 15-3 to improve to 12-0 on the season. It was their 131st straight victory in Delaware going back to the  2009 season.

“Cape is the fastest and most skilled team we’ve seen this season,” said coach Lynn Richardson after the game. “There is just no way for us to prepare for them. We played a tough first half getting great goaltending from Carleigh Knotts and only trailed 8-2. We have some kids on the field who are just in their second year of playing the sport.”

Cape played the first half without its fastest player, Alia Marshall, who was at an interview for the Beau Biden scholarship. Marshall was on the field by the second half.

“It was a little nerve-racking,” she said of the interview. “I was hoping Vice President Biden would be there, but he was on the campaign trail.”

Cape’s campaign trail is to win state title No. 11 in a row. There is one week left in the regular season. The Vikings are facing a three-game week.

“We have an always-tough and well-coached St. Andrew’s team at home on Tuesday, and they are going to be somebody’s worst nightmare in the tournament,” said Cape coach Lindsay Eichner said. “Then we’re at Caesar Rodney on Wednesday and we have to beat them to win the conference. Then we close out the regular season hosting Ursuline on Friday.”

Cape’s scoring was paced by Emily Monigle with four goals, Chloe Schaeffer and Meredith Lockwood with three each, Ella Rishko with two and Sawyer Walker, Kelly Bragg and Tarrah Welch each with one.

Cape assists came from Lockwood with three, Haley Craig and Monigle with two apiece, and single assists from Lola Messick, Anna Stancofski and Chloe Schaeffer.

Laci Dixon notched three saves and Destiny Kusen had one for the Vikings.

Poly was paced by Mackenzie Estrada with two goals and Claire Fuchs with one goal.

Carleigh Knotts had 16 saves for the Panthers.

Polytech slips to 9-3 on the season and plays at 10-2 Archmere Monday, May 6.
