Cape hockey rebounded and reacted to a sudden-victory loss to Smyrna with a dominating 5-0 win at Polytech Sept. 30, outshooting the Panthers 40-0 with a 24-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Poly’s sophomore goalie Sabrina Siaca was credited with 30 saves and recorded her 100th career save during the game.

“She’s good in all situations except getting to some of the high balls,” said assistant coach Sean Kenney. “A couple of Cape’s goals were just over her head.”

Cape sophomore defender Ellen Ramsey came up to offense to insert on penalty corners. She’d run to the near post looking for tips and rebounds. Ramsey’s game as a defender are her quick hands and decisiveness.

“I’d say those are my strengths,” she said with a smile.

Ramsey recorded her first varsity hat trick and seemed surprised at herself after the game.

“I can hit a straight ball on the insert,” she said. “And after that, with quick hands in unsettled situations, I just know the ball is supposed to go into the cage.”

Sophomore Blair Chubb scored the first goal of the game at 5:16 of the first quarter on an assist from Emily Wells. Ramsey pushed home a ball left on the doorstep by Mairead Rishko for a 2-0 first-quarter lead.

Avary Miller scored with 4:27 left in the half on a shot that hit the defender in the head before rolling across the goal line for a 3-0 Cape lead.

Ramsey scored twice in the second half on assists from Miller and Rishko.

“The loss to Smyrna, from the delay at the start to the way it ended and such a competitive and close game, is what we needed,” Rishko said. “It was fun to play in a game like that, and it showed us this season is about improving and getting better. We play a very good Indian River team (7-1) this Thursday. It will take our best game to beat them.”

Cape improved to 8-1 on the season, while the Panthers dropped to 4-4.

The Cape JV squad defeated Sussex Academy 1-0 Sept. 30, on a first half goal by Lindley Draper and a shutout from goalie Alexis Puddicombe.
