Cape used a balanced scoring attack by five different players to pace the team to a 6-1 win over Lake Forest Oct. 21 in Felton. Cape moves to 9-3-1 on the season with two games remaining.
Cape outshot the Spartans 18-4 and held a 9-1 advantage in corners.
Alex Shives started the scoring from a pass off the foot of Aldo Hernandez-Beccera five minutes into the first half. Freshman Evan Burris scored the second goal of the half on a header from a pass from big brother Gannon at the six-minute mark. After a Lake score from Aidan Garey, Niko Panyko hit the twine off an assist from Tiarnan Hefferan at 29:00. Hefferan then finished the first half with a centering pass from Angel Haro at 32:00.
Panyko scored his second of the game at the 50-minute mark from Brandon Somoza-Lima and Donovan Sandoval scored unassisted at the 57-minute to finish the game.
Cape goalie Dru Schneider made three saves in his first varsity start of the season.
“It was a great team win,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We were able to give our guys a lot of game experience. Dru Schneider played well in goal as it was his first start of the season. We struggled a bit with Lake’s backline, as they played a high line with an offsides trap. Although we scored six goals, I thought we could’ve adapted better to their system of play. It was a good win to transition into a tough week ahead as we prepare to play Caesar Rodney and Dover.”
