Cape softball’s 2025 squad made it to the DIAA quarterfinals with a power-hitting roster, but graduation has taken away that commanding group. The 2026 team looks to make up for it with small-ball  bunting, slapping and speed on the bases.

“It’s gonna be a little different this year, but I’m also very excited,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “We’re going to be young. There’s no hiding that when you have two seniors, two juniors and the rest are made up of freshmen and sophomores.”

He said there will likely be growing pains, but he’s happy with how the team is coming along so far.

“Some of the girls have really put in a lot of time and effort, and I think that’s gonna pay off,” he said. “You know we’re gonna take our lumps sometimes just from the immaturity factor and not having the experience, but I feel that we’re gonna be one of those teams that are going to catch some teams off guard.”

Tkach looks to the leadership of Jordynn Bowe at third base and Alivia Longo and Alivia McCoulsky in the outfield, while sophomore Sara Craig and freshman Riley Windish will be used in the circle as well as the infield. Senior Madison Lubiniecki and Taylor Huff will be behind the plate, and Lyla Hunsberger is the ultimate utility player who can play anywhere. Madeleine O’Malley will be a good addition at the plate and first base.

“Tegan Baker just a good all-around athlete that just brings athleticism to the lineup,” Tkach said. “Emma Reynolds and Adriana Williams will also be great players for us.”

The Vikings open their regular season Thursday, March 26, at home with Caesar Rodney.
