The Vikings outhit the Spartans 11-10, but they could not string hits together to get runners across the plate.
“This game, it was frustrating and disappointing, but we did do some good things,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “We just didn’t finish what we started. The first two innings, we looked strong. We looked confident and we were smooth, but then we reached that two outs in the third, and we let things start to unravel and we couldn’t reel it back in. All we needed was one out, but an error here, an error there. A walk, a shot to center field, a shot to right field and before you know it, we gave up seven runs. It was so frustrating, but the girls continued to battle.”
Junior Madilynne O’Malley and sophomore Mia Scott each had two RBIs to lead the Vikings. Sara Craig and Emma Reynolds each had two hits.
Sophomore Sara Craig started in the circle, going five innings and giving up eight runs, four of which were earned, and striking out three batters. Freshman Riley Windish pitched in relief, going two innings and giving up three runs, one earned.
“We had people on base, but we didn’t get them across, so it’s still part of the maturing process,” Tkach said. “It’s one thing to get hits and get people on base, but we gotta get them across home plate.”
The Vikings welcomes Indian River at 4:15 p.m., Thursday, April 23, and Red Lion at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 25.
