Cape's hockey teams post two shutouts and face no shots

September 20, 2012

The Cape Henlopen varsity and junior varsity field hockey teams combined for a 5-0 varsity win over Lake Forest followed by an 8-0 junior varsity win over Delmarva Christian on turf field two Sept. 19 as three Vikings goaltenders faced a grand total of zero shots.

The varsity squad was “starters to the bench” after the first 15 minutes after Izzie Delario scored off an assist from Alex Coverdale at 23:40 and Anna Frederick scored off an assist from Camryn Bernheimer at 18:57.

‘We want to see everyone, and we have a lot of depth, so it’s good to see where people fit in,” coach Kate Windett said after the game. “We’re not always going to play with 10 people. Our bench is definitely a strength of this team.

"We have tough opponents next week in Delmar, Sussex Tech and Bloomsburg, so we don’t want to run 10 people into the ground. If we have people ready to go, I’m not afraid to use them, and I don’t care what grade they are in,” Windett said.

Cape scored three more unanswered goals in the second half, with scores by Frederick from Sara Young, a high lofted shot off the stick of Sam Broadhurst from Delario and a final goal by Tiara Duffy from Broadhurst.

Cape will host an improved Dover program at 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21.  The Senators are 2-1, having beaten Laurel and Seaford while losing to Milford.

The Vikings then move into the toughest week on their schedule with a 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25 home game against the Delmar Wildcats, a state finalist versus Cape last season.  They are on the road for a 4 p.m.,Thursday, Sept. 27 game at Sussex Tech before hosting Bloomsburg, Pa., at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29. Bloomsburg has been Pennsylvania High School Athletic Conference Champions four times in the last five years.

The Cape junior varsity raced out to a 7-0 first half lead against Delmarva Christian, then eased on down the road for an 8-0 victory.

Emma Ludwicki and Erin Coverdale led the scoring with 2 goals each. Peyton Medd, Sydney Ostroski, Rebecca Sponaugle and Madison Irwin each contributed a goal. Lizzie Frederick had 2 assists, while Irwin and Coryn Cannon each had 1.

The junior varsity will play undefeated Dover at home Friday, Sept. 21.
