Cespedes goal and celebration earn Cape a 1-0 win and a red card
The guys with colored cards in their pockets police the pitch in the sport of soccer. Down to Delmar Oct. 13, Cape's leading scorer David Cespedes scored a goal six minutes into the game off an assist from E.J. Fountain. David is Cape's go-to striker; he has been there before and knows how to act happy. He thrust his hands into the air in exuberance, but before they came down he was banged with a red card from one of the officials, who claimed David was taunting. The Vikings played a man down the next 72 minutes and survived for a 1-0 victory, running their season record to 9-0-1. The worse news is that Cespedes must sit out the next game, a big rivalry contest Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Sussex Tech.
“I didn't say much, not wanting to make the situation worse with the officials,” said coach Gary Montalto. “I did not agree with the call, but David took it like a man and stayed focused on the game, cheering for his teammates. The team did what they had to do to meet the challenge, and I'm very proud of them.”
Montalto cited goalie Griffin Kammerer for having an excellent game with 10 saves and said the team got great defensive efforts from captain Sam McMillon and Nick Prestipino and Nick DiGuglielmo coming in off the bench.
A red card for taunting is a discretionary call by the official and not subject to appeal.
