Charles J. Bartlett, former Bethany mayor

Charles J. Bartlett, 85, of Frankford, former Mayor of Bethany Beach (1991-97) died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016. He was born in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Charles M. and Margaret Bartlett (Farrell).

He was a graduate of Gonzaga High School and Georgetown University and Georgetown University Law Center. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired as the assistant general counsel for HUD. After retirement, he worked as counsel for Brownstein, Zeidman and Schomer Law Firm in Washington, D.C.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Bartlett; daughter Katherine Hilbert; and great-granddaughter Madison Hilbert.

He is survived by his sons, Steven Bartlett and his wife Carolyn of Berlin, Md., and Charles F. Bartlett of Frankford; daughters Patricia Johnson and her husband Duane of Felton, and daughter Mary Bartlett and her husband Charles Mosser of Pasadena Md.; 10 grandchildren, Jamie, Kimberly, Steven, Caitlin, Bryan, Christopher, Thomas, Nicole, William and Jennifer, and 10 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., with service to follow Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road. He will be laid to rest after the service next to his wife at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.
