Children’s book sends message of diversity and equality

October 1, 2023

At first blush, L. Gianforte’s “The Ladybugs’ Adventure: A Read-to-Me Book of Numbers” is a story about an ever-growing loveliness of ladybugs who decide to go exploring beyond their garden.

As their adventure progresses and they meet an assortment of creatures along the way, they come to realize that differences make the world a richer and more colorful place. The ladybugs encounter dragonflies, fish, a dog and even a very regal bullfrog.

With each new meeting, they learn how much they truly have in common with creatures who look so unlike themselves. They discover that kindness is the driving force behind friendship, and that different colors on the outside make no difference at all.

“The Ladybugs’ Adventure” is geared to children ages 2 to 6. Designed to be read aloud, it is written with a rhythm to appeal to reader and listener alike. The book is illustrated with vividly colored paintings by Eileen Blodgett, an award-winning visual artist and instructional designer. As an additional educational component, Fun Facts about Ladybugs follow the story.
