Christian educator from Milton publishes second book

February 7, 2021

The Rev. Dr. Craig Taylor, a Milton resident, has written a new book that is available for purchase.

Through a study of eight evangelical churches of various sizes in the Mid-Atlantic region, “The Greenhouse Church” reveals the need for an intentional plan to develop lay leaders in the local church.

Taylor has lived in Sussex County for almost 14 years. He can often be found exploring area state parks with his wife and three children. He is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene with a doctor of ministry degree from Asbury Theological Seminary.

At Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown, he teaches apologetics, senior thesis, current events and crossing cultures. He worked at Cape Henlopen High School for almost five years as a technology specialist. The school’s greenhouse was part of the inspiration behind the book’s title and cover.

As a teenager, Taylor said he had incredible men in his church mentor him as he prepared to study religion and theology. With a belief that God is speaking to young people about their life purpose, Taylor finds great joy in walking alongside emerging leaders to facilitate their growth and development.

“The Greenhouse Church” provides practical steps to make leadership development in local churches a reality. Chapter 1 tells stories that illustrate the problem with a lack of spiritual leaders in local churches. Chapter 2 cites many authoritative sources as it explores the theological foundation for lay leadership development and the role of existing leaders to turn leadership development theory into reality. Dissertation research based on input from clergy and lay people is described in Chapter 3 in order to provide reliable research findings for the reader, which could stimulate plans for lay leadership development strategies in local churches. Chapter 4 clarifies the research findings and provides practical action steps or solutions based on the research, while Chapter 5 explains the goal of lay leadership development – to enable more leaders to leave the “greenhouse” and fulfill their mission in the world.

“The Greenhouse Church” also includes discussion questions for each chapter and other practical tools for church leaders in an extensive appendix.

The 144-page book is published through Parson's Porch Books, which functions as a ministry that uses profits to help the poor. It costs $19.95 and may be purchased in the bookstore at parsonsporch.com or amazon.com.

In 2013, Taylor published a short e-book based on the book of Nehemiah called “When Building a Life… How Nehemiah Can Change What You Thought Was Possible.” This down-to-earth, accessible book was written to help individuals searching for ultimate truth gain insight on how an ancient text makes an impact on their lives today. It is available for $2.99 through amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com.
