Chick-fil-A celebrates five years in Millsboro

The Town of Millsboro recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of Chick-fil-A's location at 30141 Commerce Drive in the Peninsula Crossing Shopping Center. Tim Sweetman, Chick-fil-A owner/operator, led a ribbon-cutting ceremony with representatives from the Town of Millsboro, WSFS Bank, Fulton Bank, The Voice Radio Network, State Farm Insurance and Hilyard's IT Services in attendance.

Compass RE opens downtown Lewes office

Compass RE announced the opening of its new real estate office on Second Street in downtown Lewes. Lewes woman inducted into collegiate honor society

Haley Holstein of Lewes was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Holstein was initiated at Texas Tech University. Membership is by invitation only, and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.

Rehoboth man competes in NCAA athletics at Albright 

Kristoffer Medford of Rehoboth Beach is a member of the NCAA Division III Baseball team at Albright College this spring. A graduate of Cape Henlopen High School, Medford is a junior studying business administration with a concentration in finance.

Millsboro woman to perform solo recital at McDaniel April 21

Sarah Aleman of Millsboro will perform in the student solo recital Friday, April 21, at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. Aleman, a vocalist, will perform "That'll Show Him" by Stephen Sondheim.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Sussex alumnae gala set April 22

The Sussex County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will celebrate its 35th anniversary gala from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, April 22, at the CHEER Community Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road off Route 9 east of Georgetown. Rhythm TEC Entertainment will provide live music. Tickets are $75 at eventbrite.com.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded Jan. 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. The founders envisioned an organization committed to sisterhood, scholarship, service and addressing the social issues of the time. Since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta has become one of the preeminent service-based sororities, with more than 300,000 initiated members and over 1,000 chartered chapters worldwide.

The Sussex alumnae chapter was chartered  April 15, 1988, in Bridgeville at Calvary United Methodist Church. Eastern Region Director Madeline Lawson chartered the chapter with 14 members signing. The chapter serves Sussex County communities through its Five Point Programmatic Thrust which includes economic development, educational  development, international awareness and Involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement. 

DSWA sets collection event in Rehoboth

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority will hold a collection event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 22, at Rehoboth Elementary School, 500 Stockley St., Rehoboth Beach. Delaware residents can bring household hazardous waste, electronics for recycling and documents for shredding. 
Household hazardous waste can include items such as household cleaners, garden pesticides, oil-based paints, nail polish, fluorescent bulbs and antifreeze.

DSWA will also collect used electronics for recycling. Accepted items include old computers, printers, CD players, microwaves, telephones, televisions, video game systems and many other electronic items.

Residents can also bring up to two boxes of paper for shredding free of charge. Shredding sensitive documents is one way to reduce the risk of becoming an identity theft victim.

Free clothing giveaway set April 22

Milford Advocacy for the Homeless Inc will hold a free clothing giveaway from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, April 22, in the parking lot at Mount Enon Baptist Church, 600 Church St., Milford. For more information, go to milfordadvocacyforthehomeless.org.

Sen. Carper, open space to highlight GLF meeting April 22

The Greater Lewes Foundation will honor U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del, for his career-long dedication to the environment and open space preservation at its annual meeting set for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Lewes Public Library. Carper chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and also serves on the Finance Committee, and the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee. The meeting will also feature the first public announcement of a major local land preservation project being undertaken by the foundation and the Sussex County Land Trust. Several years in the planning, the project involves the protection of nearly 120 acres of environmentally sensitive land within and just outside Lewes city limits Those interested in attending should RSVP by calling 302-644-0107. UUSD to meet April 23

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an in-person and livestreamed service at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 23. Appreciating Our Interdependent Web of Existence will be the theme presented by John Sykes and Maggie McLaughlin, and Margaret Keefe of UUSD Earth Cares. “What if climate change meant not doom, but abundance? In this reflection taken from author Rebecca Solnit, we will consider giving up things we are well rid of, from deadly emissions to nagging feelings of doom and complicity in destruction,” said Keefe. Mispillion Art League 6x6 auction bids open April 25

Bidding for Mispillion Art League’s annual 6x6 silent auction fundraiser opens Tuesday, April 25, at 5 N. Walnut St., Milford.

Local artists create original work on 6-by-6-inch canvases for the public to browse, bid on and purchase to support the nonprofit art league.

A reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 5. Bidding ends at 7 p.m., and successful bidders will be announced before the event ends.

This year’s submissions contain a variety of mediums including textiles, collage, watercolor, oil and acrylic.

Bidding starts at $25 per canvas. If a piece is a “must-have,” a bid of $200 will secure the purchase. 

Mispillion Art League hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday.

Financial tips for retirees events set April 25, 27

Delaware Retiree Connection will offer free educational dinner events to help attendees learn how to address the challenges they may face during retirement.

On-site interviews will be held for multiple positions in environmental services from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, at the Specialty Surgical Hospital on the Rehoboth Health Campus, 19161 Healthy Way, Rehoboth Beach. Sign-on bonuses of $2,500 are being offered for floor techs, housekeeping and laundry services.
