American Legion yard sales to begin May 15

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 will hold yard sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following Saturdays: May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21 and Sept. 18. Spaces are available for $20 each; vendors must bring own table. Setup begins at 7 a.m. at American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro. Events are open to the community. The Crossing to host yard sale May 15

A huge, church-wide yard sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 15, rain or shine, at the Crossing, 15183 Coastal Highway, near Milton. Furniture, electronics, housewares, kitchenware, sporting goods, clothes, toys, jewelry and much more will be available. All proceeds will benefit community children in need.

Genealogical society to meet May 15

The Sussex County Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 15, via Zoom. Officers will be elected for the 2021-22 year. Local genealogist, museum curator and food columnist Denise Clemons will be the speaker. She is the archivist for the Lewes Historical Society and past regent of the Col. David Hall Chapter of the DAR. Clemons’ topic is “How to Use the Daughters of the American Revolution Records for Genealogical Research.” She will briefly discuss a document titled Forgotten Patriots: African American and Native American Patriots in the American Revolution. The society will continue to host a question-and-answer session on Zoom from 4 to 5 p.m., the first Wednesday of the month during the summer. It will sponsor a six-week discussion group on land records and maps beginning at 2 p.m., Monday, June 7. The society will hold its next general meeting Saturday, Sept. 18, when Lisa Louise Cooke will discuss How to Reopen and Work a Genealogical Cold Case. For more information, go to scgsdelaware.org.

Juneteenth vendor apps due May 15

The Richard Allen Coalition, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Sussex Alumnae Chapter, Restoration Worship Center, Everlasting Hope Ministries and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, in collaboration with the Buffalo Soldiers, will host the annual Juneteenth celebration at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 19, at the Richard Allen School property, 316 S. Railroad Ave., Georgetown. Juneteenth celebrates and commemorates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.

There will be entertainment, games, historical information, vendors, food and door prizes. This will be an outdoor event without the indoor tours. Attendees can spread over the acreage at the school and follow social distancing guidelines.

Distinguished Young Women applications due May 15

Distinguished Young Women is a nonprofit organization which provides college scholarships and personal growth opportunities to young women who are pursuing higher education. The program focuses specifically on scholarship, leadership and talent. 

The Class of 2022 four-day program for Delaware will be held in August at Possum Point Players theater in Georgetown. Girls who are currently juniors may apply by Saturday, May 15. The program includes workshops to help girls build life skills like job interviewing and public speaking. More than $1 billion in scholarships are available nationally to participants each year. Some colleges offer scholarships to young women just for participating. Delaware Art Museum to host virtual event May 16

The Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington will hold a virtual slow art tour and artful meditation from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, May 16.  Viewing and making art can reduce stress and improve mental health. A virtual edition of the museum’s monthly slow art tour will be followed by a meditative art experience. For more information, go to delart.org.

Unitarian Universalists to meet online May 16

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an online service at 10 a.m., Sunday, May 16. Every year, the Unitarian Universalist Association offers a book as a common read, and this year’s is “Breathe: A Letter to My Sons,” by Imani Perry. This service will consider why joining in with the common read each year helps UUs grow in faith together. For more information, go to uussd.org.

Beebe Healthcare will host a job fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, May 17, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Capitol Room, 1706 N. Bank of America donates PPE items for vulnerable communities 

Bank of America recently provided more than 225,000 personal protective equipment items for distribution to Delaware’s most vulnerable communities. This brings the total number of PPE items provided by Bank of America locally to nearly 500,000.

Items including adult disposable masks, children’s masks, hand sanitizer, isolation gowns and latex gloves were presented to Donate Delaware for distribution. In partnership with local nonprofits across the country, Bank of America has distributed more than 25 million masks as part of its ongoing efforts to address health-related disparities accelerated by the coronavirus.

Donate Delaware has a request form on its website donatedelaware.org to be completed by organizations and communities throughout the state. As part of its outreach, Donate Delaware volunteers will work with nonprofit and community leaders to ensure that the PPEs reach the most vulnerable populations as well as frontline workers, senior homes, schools and health centers.

South Coastal Village Volunteers opens office

An organization of neighbors helping neighbors, South Coastal Village Volunteers has opened an office in Ocean View. It is a branch of Village Volunteers, a nonprofit volunteer organization serving Lewes and neighboring towns. Members are older adults who choose to live independently in their community. Volunteers help members to do things such as shopping and going to appointments. Older adults who reside in Bethany Beach, Ocean View or Millville ZIP codes and are able to walk under their own power or with the assistance of a cane or walker are eligible for membership. Support groups for healthcare workers ongoing

Delaware Psychological Services is offering free online confidential support groups for healthcare workers dealing with COVID-19 issues.
