Culinary training at Food Bank of Delaware to begin March 22

The Food Bank of Delaware is accepting applications for its free14-week training program, the Culinary School.

Classes begin Monday, March 22, and meet remotely and in small in-person groups during weekdays at the food bank’s Milford facility.

Students will work under the guidance of chef instructors Tim Hunter and Tish Badamshin to learn basic and high-end kitchen skills, and participate in a two-week paid work experience. Students also have the opportunity to earn ServSafe certification.

“There are great jobs available in the food service industry,” said Hunter. “While the pandemic has impacted our industry significantly, many sectors are currently in need of skilled employees. As restaurants bounce back as more Delawareans get vaccinated, there is going to be even more of a need.”

In addition to the 12 weeks of training and two-week work experience, students also receive job placement assistance, textbooks, uniforms, a chef’s knife, and transportation to and from class.

The free training is made possible thanks to generous donors.

Like many of the Food Bank of Delaware’s Culinary School students, current participant LaMont Scott Jr. believes the training he is receiving will support his dreams and long-term goals. The Delaware native and former Florida resident describes the workforce development program as “an opportunity meant for me.”

“I’m 61, and I want to learn. Coming here makes it easier. It’s amazing; I’ve never worked in an industrial kitchen.”

LaMont and his classmates will graduate in March.
