Darcella Venisa Mays, kind-hearted soul

October 5, 2022
Darcella Venisa Mays, 66, of Lewes, departed from this life Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at 12:15 in the afternoon. She was born at 3:09 p.m., July 2, 1956, in Camden, N.J., to her parents Mary Lee Mays and Alfred George Mays.

Darcella worked at her mother’s corner store, played basketball for Maddon Heights junior and senior high schools, and became a full-time student at Rutgers University after giving birth to her son, Damon Mays.  Darcella studied penmanship, learned to play the piano and speak fluent French.

Darcella loved reading books, sports, music, dancing, and spending time with her family, especially during the holidays. She later moved to Dover, worked for the Department of Labor, was a certified welder, an Avon representative, and worked at Modern Maturity Center.  She moved to Burbank, Calif., to work in the cafeteria at NBC Studios, where she made close friends.  She loved interacting with the stars. Darcella returned to Dover and spent the remaining years of her life in Lewes.

Darcella was very kind-hearted, a great mother, and loving and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who had a good heart. She was optimistic and able to find good in every aspect of life.

In addition to her parents, Darcella was preceded by her sister Carol Mays Barksdale and brother Manfort Harris.

Darcella is survived by her son, Damon Mays and his fiancée Andrea Teodozow; grandchildren, Angel Atkins, Cameron Keller, Amier Viands and Betsy Viands; niece, Carol Lecounte (Martin Burton); nephews, Mahadaye Lecounte, Brandon Mays and Brandon Mays Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Darcella will truly be missed by her family, as well as by anyone who knew her, my heart!

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at CoCo Mango Island Grille, 20557 John J. Williams Hwy., Lewes.

Final care has been entrusted to Bennie Smith Funeral Home of Delaware.
