Delaware sculptor Richard Bailey exhibits on display through September

At Dover Art League and Wilmington's Gallery 919 Market

Delaware sculptor Richard H. Bailey has two art exhibits running through September at the Dover Art League and at Wilmington’s Gallery 919 Market. Both exhibits are free and open to the public.

Richard Bailey grew up in Smyrna, where he started sculpting on a salt block in Smyrna High School. He went on to study at the Delaware Art Museum; the Art Students’ League and the New School for Social Research in New York City; the Carlo Nicoli Art Studio in Carrara, Italy; and art classes in Vermont and New Jersey. He has exhibited his artwork nationally and internationally and has been given many awards and honors over the years.

Bailey has exhibited in galleries and public places in Kent and Sussex counties. He has won several awards at the Rehoboth Art League and was a featured artist at the Ward Museum in Salisbury, Md.

Bailey has also been active in art circles in New Castle County. He has had one-man art shows at the Delaware Art Museum and at the University of Delaware.  Bailey still cuts his marble and stonework on the Bailey family farm outside of Smyrna.

The Dover Art League is at 21 West Loockerman St., two blocks from State Street in downtown Dover. The exhibit and sale feature eight of Bailey’s hand-carved, multicolored marble butterflies, five hand-carved marble and onyx turtles and a red marble heron. The turtle sculptures can be seen in the front window. The exhibit is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays to Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays.  The Dover Art League phone number is 302-674-0402.

The Wilmington art exhibit is at 919 Market St., two buildings down from the Hotel DuPont. It features 12 hand-carved marble and onyx fish which sit on top of 12 handmade marble and onyx pedestals. It is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and later, by asking the guard for admission. For more information, call 302- 229-3266.
