Costume parade delights on Boardwalk
May 1, 2024

The Rehoboth Beach Doodle Costume Parade delighted attendees April 26, as furry friends strutted their stuff along the Boardwalk as part of the Doodles in Dewey weekend.

Canines – particularly doodles – of all shapes, sizes and hues donned an array of creative costumes, transforming the coastal Boardwalk into a vibrant showcase of canine couture. From Phillies uniforms to dazzling tutus, the event displayed the imaginative flair of both pets and their owners, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among dog lovers.

“The event is a fundraiser for Paws for People,” said Dawn Kisner, chair of Doodles in Dewey. “People came from 12 different states and the District of Columbia to dress up their doodles and participate in the parade.”

The event, in its third year, was expected to draw around 1,000 people, according to Clarice Ritchie, executive director for Paws for People.

“The money raised will go to help train pet therapy teams,” she said.

Spectators lined the Boardwalk, snapping photos of the adorable pooches as they pranced by. Judges had the tough task of selecting winners from the impressive lineup of contenders, considering factors such as creativity, craftsmanship and overall presentation. The event not only provided a platform for canine fashionistas to shine, but also served as a reminder of the special bond between humans and their four-legged companions.
