Escape to Lewes set for Sept. 30

Paid volunteers sought for event
September 23, 2017

Is the third time a charm for the Escape to Lewes Open Water Classic? After Mother Nature forced cancellation the first two years, organizers are back, if weather cooperates, with the first event.

Participants will leap 12 feet off the Cape May-Lewes Ferry into Breakwater Harbor. From there, swimmers follow either a 3- or 1-mile course, leading them to the ferry terminal, where they exit the bay via a floating dock near On The Rocks restaurant.

Registration is still open. The 3-mile swim is $134 until Sept. 29, while the 1-mile swim is $90.

The event will kick off with the 3-mile swim at 11:30 a.m., with the 1-miler at noon.

Quest Fitness & Kayak has put out a call for volunteer help for the event. The group is willing to pay kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders to assist the more than 900 swimmers on race day.  Volunteers will be paid and should expect to work from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 302-74-KAYAK.
