Eva Mary Somori, devoted to family

June 23, 2019

Eva Mary Somori of Spring Hill, Fla., formerly from Lewes, passed away while in hospice care May 22, 2019, surrounded by her loved ones

Eva was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1927.  Eva's mother studied to be a concert pianist, but left music behind to marry Eva's father, a colonel in the Austro-Hungarian army.  She attended an all-girls private Catholic school, Sacred Heart, in Hungary.

Eva, her husband John, and their 4-year-old son, Gabriel, fled Hungary in 1956, five months after the failed Hungarian Revolution. Eva and her family lived in a Red Cross refugee camp in Salzburg, Austria, for three years until they came to America in 1959. She was proud to become a United States citizen in 1964.

If you knew her, you would know that she loved "figures” (numbers and calculations), having been a successful medical office manager and bookkeeper for many years.  Many people in Sussex County knew her as the sweet, pleasant telephone voice who gently reminded them of their upcoming appointment with her son, Dr. Somori, at his Coastal Pain Care office in Lewes.

Eva was a very giving, caring person, and spent many hours volunteering at her local hospital.  She loved sewing, needlepoint, crocheting, and was talented at quilting, as well.  She enjoyed cooking for her grandchildren, and reading a good book.

In addition to her parents and sister, Eva was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, John, who passed in 2009.  Eva is survived by her son, Dr. Gabriel J. Somori and his wife Shelly of Spring Hill; two grandchildren, Dave Somori of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Gabby Somoza and husband Danio of Lewes; as well as her great-granddaughter, Norah Eve Somoza.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at Harvest Tide Steakhouse in Lewes, from 10 a.m. to noon.  All friends and family are welcome to attend.
