Family Promise gives assistance funds to Community Resource Center

January 19, 2022

One in six children in America lives in poverty and 2.5 million children experience homelessness annually.

When people think of homelessness, they do not usually think of families, yet nearly 35 percent of the total homeless population in the United States comprises families. This is because they are often hidden from view – living in motels, doubled up with relatives or friends, or living in their cars.

Family Promise of Southern Delaware is providing $5,000 to the Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach to help families with children pay back rent, mortgage payments and utilities, and therefore prevent family homelessness in Sussex County, directly carrying out Family Promise’s mission during the cold winter of 2022.

Applicants should contact the Community Resource Center, complete their application and be screened by their case manager before being considered to receive this assistance. Partnering with similar nonprofits this winter allows Family Promise of Southern Delaware to distribute help rapidly and efficiently as it grows into a new Southern Delaware affiliate of its national organization.

The mission of Family Promise of Southern Delaware is to prevent and end homelessness for families in Sussex County. There are more than 100 homeless children in the Cape Henlopen School District and many more families at risk of becoming homeless.

Incorporated in 2019, Family Promise of Southern Delaware is looking to establish the same prevention, sheltering and support services that have proven to be effective in more than 200 other affiliates nationwide, making family homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring.

Family Promise will hire a case manager in 2022 and will begin screening applicants for additional funds this year. Fundraising events and community awareness meetings will continue. Family Promise of Southern Delaware is looking for volunteers to assist families in the homeless community and help prevent local families from becoming homeless.
