Fenwick Island Barefoot Gardeners set plant sale May 9

Proceeds help beautify Fenwick Island
May 5, 2015

It is spring planting time again, and the Fenwick Island Barefoot Gardeners are providing a perfect opportunity for all those with green thumbs and would-be green thumbs to get their garden growing.

The annual Barefoot Gardeners Plant Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.,  Saturday, May 9, rain or shine, at Coastal Highway and James Street (across from the Pottery Place), bayside, Fenwick Island. It's a great occasion to select the ideal gardening gift for Mother's Day.

There will be varieties of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables. Some of the plants that will be available are heirloom tomatoes, supertunias and grasses. Native plants which have proven popular and hardy will also be for sale. The garden club will have containers already planted and ready for sale.  Members of the garden club will be on hand to answer questions about the plants available and to advise on what combinations of plants will work best.

Proceeds from this annual plant sale are used by the Barefoot Gardeners to beautify the community of Fenwick Island, as evidenced by the plantings in the median of Route 1 and large planted pots at various locations all over town. In 2014 the club also assisted the Town of Fenwick in landscaping Cannon Street Park, a stop on the kayaking trail. Another beautification project of the club is the landscaping and seasonal decoration of the historic Fenwick Island Lighthouse.

The club has also been actively involved in providing landscaping and other garden-related enhancements to Justin’s Garden, part of Justin’s Beach House, an oasis at the beach for families that have a child dealing with cancer. A new club project is assisting students at Indian River High School with beautifying the school campus. For more information, contact Karen Dudley at 302-436-2223 or Lois Twilley at 410-251-2120.
