Friends bid farewell as Gitensteins depart for ambassadorship

January 22, 2022

Nominated by President Joe Biden and approved by the Senate as U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Rehoboth homeowner Mark Gitenstein and his wife Libby have been posted to live in Brussels, Belgium.

Neighbors gathered on Henlopen Avenue Jan. 15 in chilly 15-degree weather to send the couple off with warm wishes.

The COVID-proper driveway party lasted all of 45 minutes due to the bitter cold. The short but sweet gathering included presentation of a signed poster, a song and brief remarks by the ambassador.

Warm cider and cookies added to the festive farewell before the Gitensteins flew off to Europe, and more than two dozen of their shivering, warm-hearted book club friends returned to their own toasty Rehoboth and Lewes homes.
