Georgetown fire officer critically injured at crash scene

A Georgetown Fire Company fire police officer was critically injured Nov. 3, while he was at a crash scene on Route 9.

Police said the incident happened at 8:36 p.m. when the Georgetown man, 78, was providing traffic control at Route 9 and Shingle Point Road. 

A Honda Accord driven by a Georgetown man, 20, was traveling eastbound on Route 9 approaching Shingle Point Road and struck the fire police officer, who was wearing a high-visibility reflective vest and hat, and using a red strobe wand while standing in the eastbound lane near his vehicle, which had blue emergency lights activated. 

The fire police officer was flown to an area hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the Honda was not injured.

Route 9 was closed while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash and asks anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact Master Cpl. K.
