Habitat for Humanity RV Care-Vanners to visit Lewes Sept. 24

September 19, 2014

RV Care-A-Vanners is a volunteer program with Habitat for Humanity for anyone who travels in a recreational vehicle, wants to build Habitat houses and have fun doing it. This week Sussex County Habitat for Humanity welcomes Diane and George Gravlee, Care-a-Vanners extraordinaire.

The Gravlee’s have made it their mission to visit and build on Habitat projects in all 50 states. Their 10-day stay in Delaware will be their 49th state, and when they finish helping to build a home for a local Sussex County family they will pack up once again and head to North Dakota to complete their mission.

The RV Care-A-Vanners program welcomes people of all ages, from all walks of life who want to pick up a hammer and help change lives. There are ample opportunities to learn and plenty of meaningful work for everyone. There is also at least one international RV build opportunity each year. On these trips, the organized group travels to other countries, rents RVs and participates in a Habitat build or two while touring. RV Care-A-Vanner volunteers participate in projects such as house construction, roofing, interior and finish work, renovations or disaster relief. Those who prefer non-construction activities can volunteer in the Habitat affiliate office, or act as gofersaround the build site.

Many RV Care-A-Vanners help local Habitat affiliates raise the awareness of poverty housing and homelessness by speaking to community groups and local media. SCHFH will be hosting a welcoming reception for the Gravlees Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m., at Bethany Blues in Lewes. The reception will be an opportunity for anyone in the community to come together for appetizers and meet the Gravlees.

“I hope we can do it justice and keep everyone interested in our story," Diane shared when calling from the road. “We love telling our story and sharing the Habitat experience”
