Harvest Tide Steakhouse opens on Lewes Beach

Owner seeks to fill void in city’s restaurant selection
July 6, 2018

The transformation from pizzeria to the new Harvest Tide Steakhouse on Lewes Beach is dramatic, to say the least.

The new restaurant on Savannah Road sits three blocks from the beach. After DaVinci’s Pizzeria closed last year, the space sat empty until chef and owner Danio Somoza-Angel saw through the flaws and had a vision.

After six months of work, the steakhouse opened just before the Fourth of July holiday. He owns the restaurant with his wife, Gabby, and brother and wife Enrique and Taryn.

“They told me I was crazy for thinking we’re going [to transform] this space,” Somoza-Angel recalls of his early conversations with his family. “I just said it needs a nice, clean look.”

The changes are apparent from the moment one pulls into the parking lot. Gone are the red brick exterior and red awning, replaced with gray-painted brick and gray facade with black trim and wood accents. The front entrance was removed and replaced with a big window that offers a scenic view of the marsh.

Inside, there’s not a single trace of the former pizzeria. Guests are greeted by a hostess; a few high tops and a 21-seat bar sit toward the back. An open doorway takes patrons into a large dining room with big front windows offering plenty of natural light. At the back of the dining room, an eight-seat butcher block chef’s table overlooks the kitchen.

“I wanted to show people that we don’t hide anything behind the walls between the kitchen and the front of the house,” Somoza-Angel said.

The chef’s table will be available by reservation only. He also plans to use the table for menu tastings and other special events.

The menu features a large variety of steaks. The highlights are the 21-day dry-aged New York strip and ribeye. Somoza-Angel uses a humidity- and temperature-controlled cooler to ensure the steaks are perfect.

“It makes it really crispy, so you have to carve that out to get the inside,” he said. “It makes it really, really tender.”

Harvest Tide also offers a 40-ounce tomahawk, 8-ounce filet mignon, center-cut top sirloin, porterhouse and Delmonico steaks.

Steaks run from $29 to $70, Somoza-Angel said.

“We want to do something where people can afford to eat out, especially steaks, and still have that great quality,” he said.

There are several options on the menu for the nonsteak eaters in the group, including gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. The steak selection will remain the same year round, but, Somoza-Angel said, he expects to change the rest of the menu seasonally.

There are happy hour specials at the bar daily from 3 to 6 p.m.

Somoza-Angel said he believes the new steakhouse fills a void in Lewes.

“We were looking to do a really high-end Mexican restaurant, but there’s no way we can do another Mexican restaurant high-end with Agave being so close,” he said. “My brother’s wife said there’s no steakhouse here. From that point on, it took about six months to get to where we are right now.”

Harvest Tide Steakhouse, 410 E. Savannah Road, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Hours will likely change in the off-season. For more information including lunch, dinner and happy hour menus, go to www.harvesttide.co or call 302-644-2600.
