Harvey Leroy Boswell, WWII POW

Harvey Leroy Boswell, 97, passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, in Lewes. He was born June 12, 1924, to the late Roy and Catherine Boswell of Brooklyn Park, Md.

Harvey served in the U.S. Army during WWII, as part of the 82nd Airborne Division and was captured during the Invasion of Normandy in June 1944, spending nine months as a POW in Limburg, Germany. Upon being freed by the Russian Army in May 1945, he returned to Maryland, where he worked as a bricklayer prior to being employed by Westinghouse Electric until his retirement in 1984.  

In November 1946, he married Elizabeth V. Harnsberger, and the couple resided in Glen Burnie, Md., to raise their two daughters. In 1984, the couple moved to Lewes where Harvey enjoyed boating, crabbing, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

Harvey was a member of American Legion Post 28, Millsboro, and VFW Post 7447, Rehoboth Beach. He was honored on Sept. 19, 2020, in what his community called Harvey Boswell Day.

Harvey is survived by his wife of 75 years, Elizabeth V. Boswell of Lewes; daughters, Diana E. Welborn of Annapolis, Md., and Susan E. (Gary) Wilkes of Glen Burnie, Md.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
