The Jefferson School represents Sussex and Kent counties at ACDA Children’s Honor Choir

March 17, 2013

Eight students from The Jefferson School performed March 2 at the American Choral Directors Association Delaware Children’s Honor Choir in Wilmington; they were the only school representatives from Sussex County or Kent County.

Rehearsals were held March 1, followed by performances March 2 at Newark High School with guest conductor-composer Jim Papoulis. Papoulis founded Amphion Music in 1993, a full-service music production company specializing in composing and recording original music for films, television commercials and dance performances. His extensive and diverse resume includes production work for The Paris Opera and Christina Aguilera.

Papoulis’ distinctive musical style combines contemporary sounds with musical traditions from around the world.

The Jefferson School students sang three songs written and composed by Paoulis: "Oye," "When I Close My Eyes" and "Kusimama." They also performed two other selections: "Domine Deus, Angus Dei,"  by Vivaldi edited for children by Janet Galvan, and "Bee, I’m Expecting You," by Emma Lou Diemer based on a poem by Emily Dickinson which had been arranged specifically for children’s choirs.

The experience was coordinated by TJS music teacher Ann Freeman. Freeman also serves on the Board of Directors for DEACDA.

The Jefferson School is located on 43 wooded acres in Georgetown and strives to provide innovative academic programs that foster an enthusiasm for learning.
