On Feb. 23, DelDOT held a workshop on the proposed changes to Kings Highway in Lewes. The scope of this project includes the corridor from Dartmouth Road to Freeman Highway.
According to the plans, there will be five roundabouts along this corridor. One of the circles will be constructed at the junction of Kings Highway and Freeman Highway; thus eliminating the Warren S. Golde Gateway Garden as well as the perennial garden by the lighthouse.
Lewes in Bloom created and has maintained this garden for a number of years. The tulips in the spring and the annuals blooming during the summer and fall have provided a lovely and welcoming sight to not only visitors to Lewes, but also to the many travelers using the ferry. It is truly a gateway to the whole state of Delaware.
While Lewes in Bloom knows we cannot stand in the way of progress, our members are extremely concerned about losing this showcase entrance. We strongly encourage DelDOT to include a garden or gardens at that location in their plans. There is currently irrigation in place for the garden generously provided by the Delaware River and Bay Authority that could be used that would make a garden there more viable.
We encourage our friends and neighbors to express their concern for losing this incredible asset by sending an email to dotpr@delaware.gov. All comments must be received by Wednesday, March 23. For more information, go to bit.ly/3KJK2ok.
