Man charged after allegedly stealing Dewey Beach Patrol ATV

May 27, 2023

A 27-year-old Harrington man is facing felony charges after he allegedly stole a Dewey Beach Patrol ATV, drove it on Route 1 and tried to evade police.

About 2:25 a.m., May 27, Dewey officers observed a yellow four-wheeler traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1 without headlights activated. The driver, later identified as Michael Sabino, turned onto Saulsbury Avenue toward the beach. He traveled on the beach to Dagsworthy Avenue, where he was confronted by a Dewey officer. Police say Sabino rapidly accelerated, dragging the officer several feet and causing minor injury. Police say Sabino then proceeded toward Route 1, but abandoned the four-wheeler behind a commercial building. Several officers found Sabino, and he allegedly resisted arrest, causing injuries to two other police officers. One officer was treated for a hand injury at Beebe Healthcare.

Sabino was also transported to Beebe Healthcare, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Police say Sabino burglarized the Dewey Beach Patrol headquarters building and stole the ATV from a secured, locked area. He was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of endangering the welfare, three counts of third-degree burglary, three counts of criminal mischief under $1,500, one count of offensive touching of a law enforcement officer, one count of theft over $1,500, one count of operating an off-the-highway vehicle under the influence and numerous traffic violations. Sabino was arraigned and released on a $25,050 unsecured bond.
