Melanie McCloy receives 2018 Lefty’s Young Citizen Scholarship

May 30, 2018

Cape Henlopen High School senior Melanie McCloy has been selected as the first recipient of the Lefty’s Alley & Eats Young Citizen Scholarship, which recognizes and rewards local students who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and character in their homes, schools and communities. Each month this past school year, Lefty’s selected one area senior to receive a lane side party for 10 at Lefty’s to celebrate the student’s achievement. Each monthly recipient was considered for the $1,000 scholarship. Lefty’s received more than 50 applications in its inaugural year.

McCloy was selected for her strong leadership both in school and in the community. “We had eight strong candidates to choose from, but Melanie really stood out to our selection committee. Melanie is an extremely impressive young citizen, and everyone at Lefty’s can’t wait to see what the future holds for her,” said Jennifer Gooner, director of operations. “We know that $1,000 is a drop in the bucket for Princeton, but hopefully it will buy a few books.”

McCloy is an accomplished athlete participating in field hockey, basketball and tennis. She is an avid fan of music and dance, and is a member of three different band ensembles and the Coastal Dance Academy Competition Team. McCloy has also been engaged with Delaware Special Olympics for over 10 years. She plans to study engineering.

Any area seniors who exhibit strong leadership in their schools and community are encouraged to apply for Lefty’s Young Citizen Award and Scholarship.
